Alyssa Terry, M.S., CCC-SLP

Terry

Alyssa Terry is a doctoral student in the Rehabilitation Science Doctoral Program at the University of Florida under the co-mentorship of Drs.  Karen Hegland and  Emily Plowman. Alyssa became interested in the field of speech-language pathology after receiving speech therapy throughout preschool and elementary school for an articulation (speech production) disorder. During an introductory class to the field in undergrad, Alyssa learned about the medical side of speech therapy and was immediately interested. Alyssa went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Central Florida in 2015 and her master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology at Florida State University in 2017. Prior to starting her PhD at UF in 2020, she worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in a variety of clinical settings, including long-term acute care hospital (LTACH), skilled nursing facility (SNF), acute rehabilitation hospital, and assisted living facility (ALF). Alyssa’s current research interests are related to airway protection in individuals with neurodegenerative diseases and other acquired diseases. She is enjoying the opportunity of being involved in the research of Dr. Hegland’s Upper Airway Dysfunction Lab and Dr. Plowman’s Aerodigestive Research Core Lab. Alyssa remains active as a clinical SLP in the acute care hospital setting. Outside of school and research, Alyssa enjoys training for and running marathons, hiking with her dogs, practicing yoga, going to coffee shops, and spending time with friends and family.
